Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj

The Personification of Divine Love and Grace Since eternity, divine personalities have descended on earth for the welfare of humans. Jagadguru Shree Kripalu ji Maharaj is one such divine personality, who is amongst the most unique and highly revered spiritual master. “Shree Maharajji”, as he is lovingly called by his devotees, was born on the auspicious night of Sharad Poornima in 1922, in the village Mangarh, near Allahabad in the eastern state of Uttar Pradesh, India.

Childhood and youth Jagadguru Shree Kripalu ji Maharaj spent his childhood just like any other, absorbed in playing games and frolicking with his young friends. He was well known to be very intelligent and would excel effortlessly in his studies. At the age of fourteen, he left his village and attended three Universities, in Kashi, Chitrakoot and Indore. He covered a whole series of courses in the space of just two-and-a-half years.
Absorption in Divine Bliss At the young age of sixteen, Shree Kripalu ji Maharaj suddenly gave up his studies and entered the dense forests of Chitrakoot. There he spent his time absorbed in intense love for Radha Krishna. He would often lose all external consciousness, and go without eating and drinking for many days. For long intervals, he would remain in mahabhav, the highest stage of devotion that manifests in Radha Rani. The very same manifestation of mahabhav love was last seen in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, about 500 years ago. He emerged from the forest after two years to begin his mission of revealing the glories of Radha Krishna devotion to the world.

Kirtan movement Shree Maharajji started to conduct ‘satsangs’ that brought about a revolution of Bhakti or devotion in the states of UP and Rajasthan in the 1940s and 50s. He would lead kirtans imbued with intense devotion, which would continue throughout the night. These kirtans, which he wrote himself, have been compared by scholars with those of Meerabai, Soordas, Tulsidas, and Ras Khan.
Shree Maharajji’s divine kirtans have captured a special place for themselves in the hearts of sincere devotees across the globe. Scriptural Discourses After accepting the title of Jagadguru Kripaluji Maharaj traveled throughout the country for fourteen years. He would deliver month-long discourses in each city, in which he would unravel the mysteries of the scriptures before tens of thousands of people, who would throng the venue for a glimpse of this extraordinary scholar and Saint whose words left them spellbound. Shree Maharajji’s lectures tantalize the masses with humor, worldly examples, practical instructions and playful chastisement, much to the delight of the crowd. It was a unique experience as he made the deepest scriptural truths accessible to everyone in the simplest language.

Devotional literature Jagadguru Shree Kripalu ji Maharaj has written thousands of inspiring verses revealing the Divine pastimes of Radha Krishna. His style of writing is unique in the entire history of saints: First, he begins the chanting of a pada or kirtan, and as the kirtan progresses, he keeps adding lines to it, bringing it to a consummate close. In glorification of Shree Radha Krishna Devotion, he has named one of his principal creations as “Prem Ras Madira”, or “Divine Love Intoxicant”. A literal (verbatim) translation of the name of one of the greatest treasures of a devotee is a naïve and futile attempt. One is lost for words to describe the intensity and greatness of the pads and kirtans written by Shree Maharajji. It is only by singing the inebriating kirtans that we can get a glimpse of the unfathomable Divine love that pours out from the heart of true devotee of Shree Radha Krishna.

Worldwide mission It is Shree Maharajji’s vision that every soul should get a chance to practice Bhakti or devotion in its simplest form, so that the soul may attain its true goal of God-realization. In order to help people around the world quest towards this goal, Shree Maharajji began training devotee preachers and sending them to different parts of the globe. He also created a formal organization and began the construction of huge ashrams, to provide facilities for devotees who wished to practically apply the teachings in their lives. This organization is today known as the Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat. Every soul seeking divine love & bhakti realizes the infinite grace of Shree Kripalu ji maharaj.

"Smile, open your eyes, and love" - Poem about Jagadguru Kripalu Ji Maharaj

You can shed tears that he is gone.

or you can smile because he had lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all he has left.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what he'd want: smile, open your eyes, and love.

Profound and Practical Literature

One must sincerely strive to understand the significance of the opportunity that is before us, in the form of this profound and timeless knowledge. How fortunate we are to be present in this age to be able to receive the benefits.

His graciousness has no equal and his kindness has no limit - we can only have a fleeting glimpse.

Essence of the Philosophy of Divine Love

From all the scriptures we need to understand the answers to three questions to get the Essence of philosophy of Divine Love:

-> What is our relationship with God?
-> What is the means for establishing that relationship?
-> What final goal will we attain once that relationship has been established?

These questions are addressed by Shree Maharajji’s philosophy which has been summarized as below as :

Philosophy of Divine Love

  • Every living being is incessantly searching for happiness. This search is natural to our being, since we are an eternal part of God, who is the ocean of Divine Bliss. The search for happiness is the search for God, except that is unknown to our mind and intellect. Hence, God-realization is the goal of our lives.
  • We cannot know God by our senses, mind, and intellect. These instruments of knowledge of ours are material, and cannot fathom the Divine nature of the Supreme Being.
  • The only means of knowing God is through his Grace, whereby He Himself bestows His Divine knowledge upon the soul
  • If we wish to receive that Divine Grace, we must surrender ourselves to Him. This surrender is not an external act; it should be from within. True surrender is that of the mind.
  • The difficulty in surrendering our mind to God is that at present, it is attached to the world; we must first detach it from here, only then can we attach it to God.
  • At this stage, we need a Guru, or a Spiritual Master who can explain to us on the basis of the scriptures how to detach the mind from the world and attach it to God. The qualification of a genuine spiritual Master is that he must be God-realized himself.
  • Although the Vedas mention the three means of karm, gyana, and bhakti, our goal of God-realization can be accomplished through bhakti alone. Karm needs the addition of bhakti to make it karmyog; gyan needs the addition of bhakti to make it bhakti to it to make it gyanyog; while bhakti is by itself bhaktiyog.
  • This bhakti or devotion must be performed selflessly, without the desire for any material rewards. The desire for liberation is an inferior desire, since liberation is an automatic by-product of attaining devotion.
  • In this devotion, we can establish five kinds of relationships with the Supreme Being. We can look upon Him as our King, our Master, our Friend, our Child, or our Beloved. Amongst these, worshipping God as our Beloved, in the mood of the gopies of Vrindaban, is the highest.
  • Longing for our Divine Beloved develops by the practice of Roop-dhyan, or meditation on the personal form of God. Along with this, we must learn to remember Him throughout the day, by feeling His Divine presence with us at all times.

  • When our heart is perfectly cleansed by the practice of devotion, we will receive another kind of devotion by the Grace of our Spiritual Master, called perfect devotion or Divine Love. This Divine Love is an eternal power of God; it is such a power that God Himself becomes captivated by the devotee who possesses it. With that Divine Love, we will engage in the eternal loving service of the Supreme Lord, and upon leaving this body, we will enter His eternal Divine leelas & finally achieve unlimited happiness & Divine Love.

Worldwide Mission

It is Shree Maharajji’s vision that every soul should get a chance to practice Bhakti or devotion in its simplest form, so that the soul may attain its true goal of God-realization. In order to help people around the world in their quest towards this goal, Shree Maharajji began training devotee preachers and sending them to different parts of the globe. He also created a formal organization and began the construction of huge ashrams, to provide facilities for devotees who wished to practically apply the teachings in their lives. This organization is today known as the Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat.Every soul seeking divine love & bhakti realizes the infinite grace of Shree Kripalu ji maharaj.

Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj considers service to society as a very important feature of his divine mission and contributes immensely to many causes of the nation and the society in general. He has constructed three fully charitable hospitals in Mangarh, Barsana and Vrindavan for the benefit of the poor and needy. Under his guidance and blessings, the organization has also established a charitable school and a women’s college for over 1000 students to bring high quality education for the underprivileged. He regularly donates clothes, utensils and other needy items to thousands of poor who throng his doorstep. Dedicated to the devotion of Shree Radha Krishna, these temples serve as a beacon of shining light for the millions of people looking for a ray of hope in the path of spiritual progress.

Leadership Service Series Workshop Content

Day 1 Session 1: Introduction to Leadership

This session begins with the foundation of all leadership, which is being prepared to follow as much as to lead. Good leaders connect and then lead and hence it is important to understand the team. All leadership involves love for the followers and the strength to lead. However, for leadership to succeed, love must precede and trump strength. The session includes an exercise to appreciate and develop these leadership qualities.

Day 1 Session 2: Discover your True Calling

Selecting a right career option is one of the most important choices the students would make. A framework which can help the students to think about this topic would cover discovering one’s true talents, identifying the parameters of success and finally, discover the true passion. We would do the interactive exercises to help the participants think about their inner talents and motivations.

Day 1 Session 3:Assess Your Spiritual Intelligence

The concept of IQ as the singular parameter for gauging one’s intelligence has been replaced by the modern theory of multiple intelligences. It states that humans possess a number of intelligences that develop relatively independent of each other. In this session participants will evaluate their spiritual intelligence through a specially prepared test. This will enable them to assess themselves on various aspects of wisdom, and identify the areas they need to work upon. The evaluation will be followed by individual presentations by the participants and discussions with the panelists.

Day 1 Session 4: How to Grow in Wisdom and Navigate Your Life with it

Good leaders do not merely possess sharp intellects and vast knowledge. They also have the wisdom to guide their lives, and the lives of others through the complex pathways of the world. Cultivating leadership is thus an important aspect of developing our leadership abilities. This module is designed to demystify the concept of wisdom. It will explain what wisdom is, in terms of four skill-sets: 1) Self-awareness skills, 2) Universal awareness skills, 3) Self-mastery skills, 4) Work and professional mastery skills. It will also reveal techniques for enhancing ones wisdom, through study of sacred books, contemplation, reflection, practice, meditation, chanting, and prayer.

Day 2 Session 1: Habits of effective leaders

We believe that leaders are not born but are made. In this session, we would cover time tested habits followed by the successful leaders to manage themselves and get the best out of the team.  Some of these habits would include being proactive, effective time management, managing stress and art of effective listening. We would cover the stories from real life and do some interactive exercises so that each participant can go back with some practical steps to imbibe these habits into their day to day life.

Day 2 Session 2: Leadership Principles

Building on the foundation, 3 mathematical and universally understood principles will be explained with case studies, videos and interactive exercises. In particular we will address the academic and social issues young people face and the personal leadership needed to succeed.

Day 2 Session 3:A Case Study on the Leadership Style of Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi has been one of the most influential leaders in modern history. He not only motivated a nation to its freedom but also inspired leaders, who in turn changed the history of their country, such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. In this session, students will read a write-up on the life of Gandhi; they will then divide themselves into teams, to discuss:-
1) The admirable qualities and principles of Gandhi,
 2) The specialty of his accomplishments and the manner in which he achieved them,
3) What made him the ideal leader amongst humans, and what we can learn from his leadership style. One representative from each team will present the conclusions of their group.

Day 2 Session 4: Servant Leadership

People and organizations adopt various leadership styles, such as autocratic leadership, charismatic leadership, participative leadership, etc. But the leaders who succeed most in nurturing followers and helping them grow to their maximum potential as humans are the servant leaders. For them, leadership is not about dominating or getting ahead of others, but rather about serving; it is not about “taking” from others, but about “giving.”. This module will build upon the case study in the previous session and inspire us to develop a leadership style based on the desire to serve.

Day2 Session 5: External Speakers

One or more external speakers will provide the personal example and inspiration our aspiring leaders need to get started on their individual journeys.
